More accurately, YOU ARE WHAT YOU DIGEST.

Unfortunately, the digestive system isn't well understood or discussed often enough.

In episode 84 of The Primal Example Podcast, Joe shares 3 mealtime tips to improve digestion and takes you thru a little Anatomy 101.

While intermittent fasting has gained mainstream popularity over the last 10 years, it's something that is ingrained in our DNA since the beginning of time.

Since we were hunter-gatherers, we never knew when the next meal was going to come. Our bodies adapted and became highly efficient at counteracting this and activating several different biological processes when food was scarce.

While it was a survival mechanism in hunter-gatherer times, we can use it as a THRIVAL mechanism modern day.

In episode 80 of The Primal Example Podcast, Joe shares 3 ways that intermittent fasting can help you lose weight.

Growing up, my father was my best friend. We did everything together. He coached all of my sport's teams, I delivered newspapers with him in the morning, and I even skipped high school prom to stay home with him and watch a movie.

About 3 years ago, my father suffered his third stroke; this one, a brain stem stroke, leaving him fully paralyzed. In addition to being fully paralyzed, he requires a feeding tube to be fed and is unable to talk.

While many people would become depressed in a similar situation, my father flipped the script. My father began to appreciate the little things in life that most of us take for granted, providing an model example of fatherhood and husbandry.

In this episode, I share my father's story in hopes that we can all become more grateful for the little things in life. At the end of the day, the little things are actually the big things.

According to recent surveys, US adults are having less sex than ever. Nearly 1/4 people claim that they haven't had sex AT ALL in the past year.

With sex frequency (with a loving partner) being a predictor of healthspan and lifespan, it's important that we understand the factors at play here.

The most shocking part of this research is that MOST of the adults that reported not having sex in the last year were 20 something year old men.

In this bonus episode of The Primal Example Podcast, we discuss some of the reasons why people are having less sex than ever.

Did you know that being on hormonal birth control can alter who you are attracted to?

Interestingly, hormonal birth control can alter your attractions and nudge you to be more attracted to people with similar genetics to you. From an ancestral health perspective, this is not good.

From a survival point a view, we are naturally designed to be attracted to people with genes that are more different from us in order to diversify the genes of our offspring and increase the resilience to sickness of our children.

Hormonal contraceptives can also leave you more prone to depression, low libido, anxiety, and weight gain by altering the delicate balance of your hormones (namely estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone).

In episode 75 of the Primal Example Podcast, Joe interviews reproductive health practitioner Lisa Hendrickson-Jack, author of The Fifth Vital Sign.

Lisa shares:

  • Why the menstrual cycle should be viewed as the fifth vital sign
  • Warning signs of an unhealthy period
  • The long term effects of hormonal birth control
  • How hormonal birth control alters our sexual attractions
  • The top foods to increase fertility
  • Foods to avoid to increase fertility

While we at Primal Example have a reputation of being vegan haters, that is far from the truth. While we don't feel like veganism promotes optimal health for most people, we recognize that a properly formulated vegan diet can provide a myriad of health benefits.

While there are plenty of upsides to following a vegan diet, there are also some downsides.

In episode 4 of Primal Example Short Sodes, Joe & Erica discuss the upsides, downsides, and myths surrounding a vegan approach.

In the United States, the average commute time (round trip) is nearly 1 hour per day. If you work 5 days per week, that amounts to nearly 5 hours per week that are spent commuting.

Unfortunately, many of us waste this valuable time. Instead of using this time to focus on personal growth, knowledge seeking, or surrounding ourselves with positivity, many of us use this time to engage in toxic behaviors such as checking social media, face-timing their friend to gossip, or listening to the newest Twerk City song (I just completely made that name up).

In episode 74 of The Primal Example Podcast, Erica and Joe share some tips on how to make your commute and healthier, productive commute that is conducive to your personal growth.

Have you heard of shilajit?

In our opinion, shiliajit is one of the most overlooked and underrated supplements on the market. This sticky, tar-like, black substance is a result of plant material and minerals breaking down over a long period of time.

Sounds nasty.

But shilajit has been used to treat various illnesses for thousands of years, dating all the way back to sixth-century BCE. Shilajit contains approximately 85 different minerals IN THEIR IONIC FORM as well as fulvic acid, humic acid, and terpenes.

While shilajit was used tradionally to cure all distempers of the body, modern research shows that shilajit has some amazing testosterone boosting benefits while also potentially functioning as a fat loss aid.

In this episode of Primal Example Short Sodes, Joe and Erica share the stunning research on shilajit and discuss whether or not shilajit might be right for YOU.

Here is the shilajit supplement that we recommend.

Green tea however, is one of the few exceptions. With a history dating back to 600 AD, green tea has not only been battle tested anecdotally, but also in peer reviewed research.

While nutrition and fitness are key components to reaching optimal health, it's impossible to be TRULY HEALTHY until you have mastered your mental health game.

Only one third of people suffering from mental illness worldwide receive treatment. Additionally, 450 million people around the world suffer from mental illness.

On episode 72 of The Primal Example Podcast, author of the book Breaking Into My Life and mental health advocate Michelle Dickinson joins the show to discuss how we can become more mental health conscious, why we need to PUT OURSELVES FIRST, and how to appropriately distance yourself from people in your life who may not be serving your greatness.

About Michelle

Michelle is a passionate potter who loves to spend time with her Jack Russell Terriers Chloe and Trooper, and her rescue cat, Chance—has been in the pharmaceutical industry for over 18 years. She is currently an associate director at Johnson & Johnson, a company she adores because it feels like her second family.

Michelle’s memoir offers a rare glimpse into a young girl’s experience living with—and loving—her bipolar mother. After years of playing the role of child caregiver, she embarked on her own healing journey of self-discovery. She emerged with a strong desire to turn that challenge on its head and positively impact the mental health landscape.
